The Tennis & Racquet Club of Boston braced itself as 36 players were confirmed to compete for title of ‘2026 US Amateur Champion’. Perhaps most notably, 20 Montreal Racket Club Members battled blizzard conditions as they made the trek southwards to warmer environs!Â
The Tournament began on the Wednesday, where some of the 12 Boston members needed to play into the coveted draw, but things kicked off in earnest on the Thursday with some quick games and some upsets. We were 40 in total for the Gentlemen's Stag Dinner, and many wondered how we would all get to the dinner! A Party Bus arrived, and stopped traffic for 20 minutes on Boylston Street (at rush hour) while Racketeers made their way from the bar to the bus. No easy task! Â
Mario's Restaurant was our destination, and the smell of Ursula's homemade Italian cooking was a welcomed scent for the boys who were hungry from the day's play. An abundance of delicious food, stories and jokes were had and the boys stumbled back on the bus to head to the Member's Bar (Court 4) for a late night of camaraderie.Â
Boston's Head Racquet Professional, Neil Smith, cracked the whip early on Friday with matches starting at 8am and lasting all day, with the last match going off at 10pm.Â
After a night on the town, the quarter and semi-finals day was upon us. To compliment the incredible play on the Racquets Court on Saturday, the T&R had the annual Patriot Cup Tennis Tournament going on as well. 32 players from Newport and Boston were in the building and able to witness the most beautiful game whilst in between their tennis games!Â
The club pulled out all the stops with their Annual Holiday Party on the Saturday night. 250 people were in attendance and the US Amateur Participants did their best to keep the party rocking and rolling in to the wee hours of the morning.Â
Some tired looking supporters filed into the gallery to watch the finals on Sunday, aided by the Bloody Mary’s, Doughnuts and Breakfast sandwiches provided by the Club.Â
US Amateur Tournament  Play Commentary and Summary:
The 2026 U.S. Amateur Racquets tournament got off to a flying start Wednesday evening, with 32 players in the single's and 17 pairs in the doubles. The field included three players from England, and a large and enthusiastic group from North of the Border (20 in total!).Â
The early rounds went as expected, with no major upsets until Henry Smith (seeded seventh) came up against the number two seed from England, Julius Manton-Jones in the Quarter-finals. Smith overpowered his opponent with accurate serving and powerful groundstrokes, this set up a Semi Final match-up between Tarquin Sotir. Smith continued his dominate play, taking the first game comfortably. Sotir fought back in the second game to level the games, only to see Smith reestablish his power play and take the match by two games to one.Â
On the other side of the draw, Freddie Bristowe (Seeded 1st) eased into the Semi Finals against James Rossiter from England. Bristowe took the match in straight games, but the match produced arguably the best ball striking of the tournament, with both players hitting the ball extremely cleanly.
In the Singles Final, between Bristowe and Smith, Bristowe got off to a strong start by controlling the front of the court with perfect angles and strong serving, keeping Smith in the back of the court unable to establish his power game. This was to be the pattern of the match, with Bristowe taking the Singles Championship 3-0.
The Doubles draw had spirited matches throughout, with the two finalist pairs (Bristowe/Smith & Cipriano/Portz) not dropping a single game on their way to the Final. The Seven-time-winners (Cipriano and Portz) were matched up against the young-guns of Bristowe and Smith, fresh off their Singles battle. The Young Guns wasted no time in taking their game to their opponents, putting Cipriano & Portz under a lot of pressure on the serve, and killing the ball with great accuracy. The second game produced the best rallies of the match, with Bristowe and Smith winning in the set 16/13. Now two games to love, there was no stopping Bristowe and Smith, who closed out the match three games to love.
While Bristowe and Smith ruled the day (and the tournament!) Cipriano and Portz will be back for more in years to come! The US Amateur had some entrants who were playing in their first racquets tournament ever, AND saw three North American Born players in the finals. With 20 players from Canada, some from NY, some from Philly and others from Boston, the game is in a strong state.Â
A great deal of thanks is due to Racquets Professional, Neil Smith, for organizing an excellent tournament from the moment the first ball was struck until the trophies were handed out.2025 US Amateur Singles Results
