Just 48 hours after the final ball was struck at the Western Open, all eyes shifted to Boston for the highly anticipated 2025 US Open. Though the draw was more manageable than the one in Chicago, it was still packed with top-tier talent, making for an exciting and competitive tournament from the outset.

Singles: Seeded number 8 and fresh off his Canadian Amateur victory, James Rossiter set the stage for a fiery quarter-final clash against Alex Duncliffe-Vines. The two battled it out in a thrilling match full of spectacular shot-making, with Alex eventually clinching a 15/10 win in the deciding fifth game. The victory setting up a clash with the ever tenacious Will Hopton in the semi-finals. At 2-1 up, it seemed Will might secure the win, but Alex fought back, digging deep to win the next two games. The final score line 3-2 (15/7, 10/15, 7/15, 15/5, 15/7).

In the bottom half of the draw, Richard Owen, seeded 3rd, quickly became the tournament’s dominant force. Known for his flawless ball striking, Owen was many peoples’ pre-tournament pick for the title, and he sailed through his matches against Lewis Symonds, Conor Medlow, and Freddie Bristow, without dropping a single game. The stage was set for a showdown with Alex, a match that would go a long way to determine who would take the next shot at the world title challenge.

On Sunday morning, following a fantastic championship brunch, the crowd was eager for a close and intense final—and they were not disappointed. From the very first ball, both players showcased their athleticism and striking power. The match was a rollercoaster, and with the score tied 1-1, 13-13, it was anyone’s game. Rich managed to edge out the third game 16/13, and though Alex fought hard in the fourth, taking an early lead, Rich fought back. After what might have been the match’s first "woody winner," Rich sealed the deal with a 15/11 win in the fourth, clinching the match 3-1 (15/13, 10/15, 16/13, 15/11). The match was played in great spirit and each game could have gone either way - well worth watching on the NARA YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel

Doubles: The doubles competition was equally stacked with talent. In the quarter-finals, MRC and Boston professionals Dan Fisher and Neil Smith aimed to upset the 3rd-seeded duo of Freddie Bristow and Jonathan Lumley. Buoyed by the support of Honorary MRC member Tim Wagg, who had made the trip to watch, Fisher and Smith came close to taking the first game but were narrowly denied when their game-winning side wall boast grazed the top of the tin by millimeters. Bristowe took advantage of this let-off, and his team went into overdrive, securing a deserved 3-0 victory.

Bristowe and Lumley carried their momentum into the semi-finals, where they pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory over Richard Owen and Peter Cipriano. The match, which many had expected to be a quick win for Owen and Cipriano, turned into a gripping contest. Fresh off his first US Open real tennis singles title, John hardly missed a ball, and together with Freddy, they clawed their way back from an 8-0 deficit in the deciding set to win 8/15, 15/10, 10/15, 15/8, 15/10.

In the top half of the draw, reigning world singles champion Ben Cawston and partner Will Hopton made it to the final without dropping a game.

In the final, Bristowe and Lumley, inspired by their previous victories, gave Cawston and Hopton a real challenge. They edged ahead in all three games, but in the end, Cawston and Hopton proved too strong, securing a 3-0 win (15/9, 15/8, 15/10).

The 2025 US Open was a weekend to remember, full of intense matches, skillful play, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Richard Owen for his singles victory, and to Ben Cawston and Will Hopton for their doubles triumph. A special thanks to the pro shop, staff, and members of the Tennis and Racquets Club for their outstanding hospitality and organization. This tournament is sure to go down as one of the highest quality in years.
